Well guys, my VW Scirocco already passed the 23000km and it's rolling like new... Super fast and super reliable. But you guys know that we always want more and I'm already thinking of getting the car a remap from Revo that will raise the power to 219hp which will turn this fast car into a small rocket, what do you say?
Should I go for it already? Or wait a few more months until the end of the warranty?

Well guys, I can only tell you that I'm the happy owner of a new VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160bhp.

The car is brilliant!!

Sooooooooooo fast and sooooooooo safe with lots of electronic gadgets. The DCC suspension is wonderful, in Sport mode we really fee the car embrancing the road.

The looks are great, whenever I pass by people always keep staring at me...I kinf of feel like I have a Ferrari or something.

Dinamics of this Scirocco are great, this car loves turns...
You need to test drive one of this to feel what I feel every single day.

Yes, it's true.

I didn't buy the 320D Coupe, nor the Mini Cooper S nor the Alfa GT, I ended up buying the new VW Scirocco with the benzin engine, 1.4 liter super and turbo charged with 160bhp.
Only two extras are the DCC, dynamic chassis control, and the bluetooth for my cell phone.

I bought it in Dark Marroon and I expect it to arrive in mid February.

I hope that my new Scirocco reveals to be a good a reliable car, I never had VW before and yes, I'm an italian cars fan...

New Seat Ibiza Coupé

The Coupé version of the new Ibiza makes it a more decent car, the 5 door version was a bit ugly IMO, and this 3 door version makes it more racing style and more beautiful.

The new SportCoupé will also have a Cupra Version, with a 1.4 bi turbo engine which will have 180 bhp. Promises to be quite a machine. :D

I've severe doubts about my next car...

I've a few that I like...BMW 320d from 2006, BMW 320d Coupé from 2007, Mini Cooper S from 2006 and Alfa Gt 2006.

What I like the most? BMW 320D Coupe but it's also the most expensive.
Alfa GT seems to be the same price as the 320D berline but GT is much pretier...Althouth probably less "car" than the 320D berline...

Mini Cooper S is a toy car, I would buy it only if I find a really cheap one.

What do you guys thing I should buy?

Mosler MT900 GTR XX

For Mosler’s 20th anniversary, they announced that they will build their anniversary model, the Mosler Mt900 GTR XX. The XX is a Roman numeral symbol for 20 as in for the 20th anniversary of Mosler. They wanted to celebrate their 20th birthday with a bang and this new model will surely make such a scene. This GTR’s new version is lighter but the powertrain is still the 620 horsepower 7-liter V8 from LS7 Corvette with a 6-speed transmission. Since it’s still not out in the market and we’re all still speculating about its specs, the only thing that we can be certain of is that it can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.1 seconds and has a maximum speed of 211 mph. It weighs only about 2336 lbs and it sports a futuristic exterior that many would drool over.

It is also equipped with a KW suspension, MOVIT ceramic braking system with carbon seats and carbon clutch.

With a lighter and more powerful version of the Mosler MT900 GTR, the expectation for this car is high. Surely, as a 20th anniversary new model, this new top of the line new car will definitely gain respect.

The all new Jaguar XF has been creating a lot of waves in the automotive market since the day it has been launched. With the features of both luxury and a sports car, Jaguar XF has been reversing the fortunes of the rookie money makers in the market. The car comes in luxury and premium luxury versions.

Though the car runs on 300 horse power which all other V6 engines do as well, the car reaches the speed of 0-60 miles an hour in about six seconds. This great car has a Ford Duratec 4 cylinder engine which has 263hp @ 8500rpm and 240Nm of torque.

It has a 6 gear sequential gearbox with a launch control system.

It weights about 506kg, so it's a feather weight we are looking at.

It's top speed is not known but it probably is electronically limited to 250km/h
It goes from o to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds! That must be a huge adrenalin shot!

The superlight R500 looks like any other Caterham however the R500 gets the front of the CRS, new 13 inch rims in grey and some new back lights.

It will cost around 50k Euros and it will be available probably in June/July.

The first will be the Ferrari 430 Bio- Fuel which uses a 4.3 V8 500cv engine.

The F430 Spider Bio Fuel runs on the familiar mix of 85% natural ethanol and 15% gasoline, which results in a small 10HP power bump and fuel economy that improves by 5% over the standard gas-only V8. So that means that the 4.3-liter engine is now good for a true 500 HP.

So what is this?

It's a simple coupé with almost 6 meter long and a V12 bi-turbo engine with 700hp reached after tuned turbos and electronics by the tyre company Fulda to reach some really high speeds ( 350km/h give or take) and stuning acelleration of 4.4 sec from 0-100km/h.
This really cool project, was based on the Maybach 57 limousine, and definately required a certain amount of re-engineering; the A-pillar and doors had to be shifted rearwards, and the steering column, pedals and gearshift all re-located.

With final dimensions of 5890mm long, 2140mm wide and just 1390mm high, the car was kitted out with a full-spec interior, including leather, neoprene, aluminium and carbonfibre finishes which gave it this marvelous look.

This is the new Vinci GT, a coupé all made in Portugal and by Portuguese, inspired in the 60's and 70's cars that will begin it's production at January 2007.
Their will be made only 50 units of this super car at a rate of 2 or 3 per month, so it will be quite exclusive.

The price will be around 180 to 350 thousand Euros, so it's a bit expensive for a car that "only" will have 300hp.

Looks like there's no undestanding in the internet about the Audi A1, some say the pics found in the web are true, some say it's a hoax.
Anyway if it looked like that, certanly would be a pretty nice first car for the parents to offer to their kids. ;)
It's said that this new Audi A1 would be out in near 2009 at Frankfurt after the A2 is over, and it will be only with 3 doors and 4 seats inside. Engines will be the new twinchargers and the diesel ones, of course.

BMW is preparing to launch the BMW Z6, the sucessor of the Z8 will try to compete with the Mercedes SL and Ferrari F430 and is expecting to sell something like 15 thousand units a year.

The BMW Z6 looks like the cross between a Nissan 350Z and a Porsche 911, take a look:

The engine probably will be a bi turbo V8 or the Inline 6 cylinder with no horsepower values available yet.
The Z6 will have a carbon fiber, aluminium and magnesium chassis.

This new Mercedes SLR is to celebrate the victory of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the 722 number at the 1955 Mille Miglia competition.

It has a 5.5 liter V8 engine with 650hp wish will make this Mercedes ( Or should i call it Mclaren? ) reachs 0-100 in less then 5 seconds and with a top speed of 337km/h, which is a bit above of the previous SLR Mclaren top speed.

Some minor changes have been made to the exterior, we can now see some beautiful 19 inch wheels in black and some changes in the front bumper and air difusor in the back.

WRC back to Portugal again

After a few years without the World Rally championship it was announced that it will return to Portugal next year.
Already have a date, its going to be between March 30th and 1st of April and no...That's is not a lie.
Rumours say that it will be in the Algarve area, so lots of tarmac and probably one or two dirt specials aswell but we'll have to wait and see.

Being a WRC fan i just have to be happy about it and wait until next year. :D

Oh just to mention that i've found a really cool site, concerning car magazines. You should check it out, it's really nice!

Porsche Carrera GT

Ok you already know i'm a Porsche lover, and the Porsche Carrera GT is one of my favorite.

Its 5.7 liter 10 cylinders engine that brings 612bhp at 8000rpm to the rear wheels, makes the adrenalin go sky high to everyone who drives one of those Porsche.
It has a 6 gear manual gearbox, and a Two-plate ceramic dry clutch (Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch) and it weights only 1380kg, that is not much for a car of this power.

On the track it makes 205 mph (330 km/h), 0-62mph in just 3.8sec and a quarter mile in just 11.4secs. Fast or what?

In unveiling the Civic Type R Concept, CEO Fukui will be joined by the Honda Racing F1 Team’s ever-popular driver, Jenson Button. Jenson will be making a brief “pit stop” from his busy pre-season testing schedule to help launch the exciting concept model to the press.

Civic Type-R presented by Jenson Button from F1?! Sounds like a fast car coming from Honda.

Over 400km/h - Koenigsegg CCX available in USA

This beauty is going to be available in the USA.
As the world's second fastest car, the Koenigsegg CCX was launched at 76th Salon International de l´Auto in Geneva and it has more power then is "brother" the CCR but it's not enough to be the world's fastest car.
The CCX "only" makes over 400km/h with 900bhp pulling that carbon fiber ultralight body.
It makes 0-62mph in just 3.1 seconds and quarter mile in just 9 seconds at 146 mph.
It's going to be sold at the Ex.otic Cars in the Forum Shops at C.aesars P.alace in LA and the base price will be around US$650,000 so...Grab yourself one of those ASAP. :p

BMW M6 at 335Km/h

The car has the speed limiter turned off by the chiptuning company Vilauto Competições from Portugal, so the 250km/h speed limit is easily passed by this powerfull BMW engine with a 7 gear automatic gearbox by BMW.

The video is filmed in portuguese high ways and you can see the M6 "escaping" from a CBR1000RR and a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 at almost 340km/h.

The car is stock, only has the speed limiter turned off. So it's "only" 507 bhp making all that speed.

Ps: We do not support street racing here, this video is only to show the power of a BMW M6...

I drove a few miles with my 1991 Fiat Tipo of my father and let me tell you something...
That car looks like a boat!!!!!

It bounces in the corners like hell, noone can feel safe inside that car! The noise is very loud for a 1.1 55hp car, anda the 155/70R13 tires don't help the cornering skills!

Dispite all that it was my first car and a still love it! That car know very much about me! hehe

New VW Polo

I was able to test drive the new VW Polo
I like the exterior, although it reminds the latest one but i like this one very much!

The interiors are great, they look young and are very atractive! I liked the plastics and the overall aspect.

The 1.4 Tdi 80hp engine has more 5hp than the latest and is equally great! Good aceleration and top speed, but were it is better is in recoverys! Great results for a car with almost 1250kg!

The steering whell transmits a great feedback of the car and the chassis is adequate to the car in question, ofering nice corner ability!

Clio Vs Punto

The Clio is excellent dinamicly and seems to have good interiors and exterior, being a little inferior in my opinion.
Where they walk the Puntos to fight the Clios? Or it will be that it is not easy to perceive that who purchase a Clio now, certainly does not go to buy a Punto in December or same January already of 2006!

My father talked me about buying one in Germany at second hand and legalize it to Portugal.

With about 17-19k € i would buy a 2.0 163hp diesel engine that would last almost forever!
The car weights about 1400kg's but the high torque of this engine lets it has the performance of a real race car!

Gotta get me one of those...

Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen's old school Rabbit isn't that cool of a ride. It was an underpowered ugly econobox that tried to pass itself off as a car. Okay, so the car had some charm to it, but it's hard to get excited about a car named after a small rodent. C'mon... Rabbit? Why did America get stuck with a car called Rabbit while the rest of the world got the Golf. The Golf is the exact same car, only it has a cooler name. Wait... come to think of it, Golf isn't exactly that cool of a name, either. Moving on... bad names aside, the one good thing that the Rabbit/Golf brought to the world of automotive nomenclature was the birth of a very important and influential three letter combination: GTI.

Volkswagen introduced this "sporty" version of its econobox to American shores way back in 1983. This GTI-spec car was a lot nicer than its lower "base model" sibling. The Rabbit GTI had a sportier look and a more powerful engine. Due to its light weight and small size, the GTI's power-to-weight ratio was superb, making the car a terror on the streets and the track. Volkswagen's hopped-up Rabbit was the world's first true hot hatch.

The GTI has become something of an icon for VW, as it is considered by many to be the sporty Volkswagen. Many of Volkswagen's best engines have made it into the GTI -- from the VR6 to the 1.8T to the 2.0T in Euro market -- making the GTI a favorite among tuners. Speaking of the Euro market, folks in the Old World have been lucky enough to receive an all-new GTI. This newest of new hatches is based on the all-new Jetta that hit U.S. shores in early '05. However, this redesigned GTI won't hit the U.S. market until mid-2006, so we 'Yanks will have to make do with the "old" car for now.

Dealing with this "old" car is not a bad thing, as the current GTI still possesses all of the things we love in our sports cars. Only one engine choice is available with the current GTI -- a 180 horsepower 1.8 liter turbocharged four cylinder. This 4-banger also has a healthy 173 lb.-ft. of torque -- all of which is available from a low 1,950 rpm. Having such a good amount of thrust at such a low engine speed really helps this car move. All of this low-end torque makes the GTI seem like a rocket at launch. Sure, the car isn't actually that fast, but it at least feels quick -- and that's more than enough for some people.

With the GTI being the "sporty" car of the Volkswagen family, the suspension has been tuned more for sport than comfort. Actually, the suspension hasn't been tuned for comfort at all. This car has a very rough and very bumpy ride. Due to this roughness, the GTI feels like a proper sports car when driving on straight roads or gentle curves. Push the car in corners however, and the car will start to do things like exhibit a lot of body roll and understeer in the corners. The GTI seems less sporty than its Japanese-bred hot hatch counterparts. Still, the GTI is pretty small and maneuverable making it a blast to drive through traffic, through tight spaces... hell, it's fun to drive just about anywhere.

While the current GTI isn't the pure-bred sports machine of its early 80's forefathers, it is a lot more luxurious. Our test car came with the Leather Option, which as the name tells you, wraps every surface in soft leather. We also got some heated seats in the deal too, which is always a plus in our books. We do wish the seats had a little more side bolstering, but we have that complaint about every car. Maybe we need to gain some weight... Our test car also came equipped with a very nice-sounding Monsoon sound system, power sunroof, folding power side mirrors and all the other modern conveniences one expects to find in a 21st-century ride. Of course, the interior was well-designed and the controls were very easy and intuitive to use.

We were very surprised with the amount of space found inside the car. Folding the rear seats down revealed a cavernous storage area in this hatch. We were able to fit a full drum set, hardware and cymbals in this little hatch -- and we still had plenty of room to spare. This car is definitely bigger on the inside.

As our test GTI is of the 2005 vintage, it retains its boxy shape. Actually... every GTI ever made has been boxy. But back to the point: our GTI doesn't have the new Volkswagen "face" -- meaning no "shield" grille -- nor does it have the circular tail lights. We actually prefer the style of this boxier GTI for now, but then, we really like boxy cars. Our GTI also comes equipped with 17-inch multi-spoke rims which seem perfect for this car. These 17s did come wrapped in all-weather tires, which probably hurt the performance a bit. As we live in L.A., we can get away with summer tires all year round. Hopefully we'll get to try a more performance-minded tire during our next go-round with the GTI.

Even with the heated leather option, our GTI comes in at an MSRP of just $22,845. This puts the GTI in the same price range as the Acura RSX. Both cars offer a lot of performance and luxury for the price -- but one that wants a more "European-feeling" car would be happier with the GTI. All in all, the GTI is a great hot hatch as it is. But with the next generation of GTI just around the corner -- bigger engine and all -- we can't help but think that VW fans would be better off waiting for the next gen cars to come out.

Toyota Prius

In the expanding fleet of hybrid cars, the 2005 Toyota Prius finds the best balance of ecofriendliness and practicality to leave the rest of the competition in the dust. Its advanced technology works seamlessly under the hood, making the Prius as sensible as it is economical. Moreover, it satisfies car nuts and tree huggers alike with its lively acceleration, its great fuel economy, and its nearly silent operation, although it hits a few speed bumps: a second-rate stereo, limited driver visibility, and annoying rattles. At a base price of $20,875, the Prius is on a par with Honda's less ambitious Civic Hybrid, but with the option package, our gussied-up test model goes for $26,641. In spite of its quirks, the Prius is a marvel of engineering that effortlessly delivers superior gas mileage without sacrificing comfort or reasonable performance to make it the best hybrid on the road today.

Thanks to a sophisticated drive-by-wire system that connects the gas pedal to a computer to control the two power plants (gas and electric) and variable transmission, the front-wheel-drive Prius stretches a gallon of gas without compromises. Together, the side-by-side gas and electric power plants deliver 110 horsepower that's as smooth and quiet as a purring sewing machine. (Find out more about how hybrid cars work in CNET's hybrid buying guide.) For pulling away from a stop sign, the motor taps into the 500-volt battery pack for pure electric energy. It then switches to the 1.5-liter gasoline engine when needed and uses a combination of fuel and electric power for quick maneuvers. While the electric-to-gas transition generally occurs at about 15mph, if you're careful, you can push it to 35mph. You can watch all the action from the control screen that displays an animated power-flow diagram, which has the look and addictive quality of a video game. But whether you're cruising uphill, downhill, or on a flat road, the computer sees to it that the car has lively acceleration and the battery gets charged through the regenerative braking system.

Nearly silent in its idle state, the Prius goes from 0 to 60mph in 10.3 seconds, a suitable number for an economy car but hardly high performance. Still, that's 1.8 seconds faster than Honda's electrically assisted Civic Hybrid. On the other hand, the drivetrain is short on midrange torque, taking 7 seconds to go from 30mph to 50mph and making for a little on-ramp performance anxiety. With MacPherson strut front and torsion bar rear suspension, the Prius handles well, but you'll feel every bump in the cabin. This car calmly cruises at 60mph and stops in a reasonable 152 feet, although the brake pedal feels soft. The car has other quirks, too, such as the circular dashboard power button that starts the car and the toggle-switch gear lever (see picture below). And as with most hybrids, the engine shuts itself off about a second after stopping at a light--unnerving for those who haven't experience it. Fear not, the gas engine automatically restarts when needed, and the silent operation is actually a sign that you're saving fuel. Despite all these oddities, economy is the Prius's raison d'être, and its gas mileage of 45.8 miles to the gallon is welcome news as nationwide fuel prices hit more than $2.50 per gallon. A tank of gas will take the Prius more than 500 miles.

Shifting gears: the Toyota Prius features a quirky toggle-switch gear lever that operates like a switch.

Make no mistake--the Prius is no cramped econobox. Weighing in at 2,980 pounds, the low, sleek hatchback is a midsize car that has a lot of headroom, can seat four comfortably, and has enough space for a run to the discount warehouse. In addition, the folding rear seats (60/40 split) yield room for skis, a bicycle, or seven-foot-long lumber. Unfortunately, the cloth seats don't provide enough lower back support, and the car suffers from annoying rattles. And to achieve the Prius's enviable aerodynamics, Toyota engineers had to severely rake the windshield, creating a shape that's a conversation starter at the gas pump, but the huge dashboard is big enough for a child to sleep on, and the wiper blades barely reach the driver's eye level. Another complaint: rather than placing the digital instruments close to the driver, they sit at the base of the windshield, and the car's wide front pillar creates a large blind spot on the driver's left that makes for anxious moments; the view behind is obstructed by the split rear window.

The Prius's center-mounted 6-inch color display controls just about all the car's functions; be sure to set aside some time to read the manual to get acquainted with the system. Also, the screen shows fingerprints as easily as an episode of CSI and blanks out in bright sunlight. Its eight buttons are easier to use than conventional car controls but less versatile than BMW's single iDrive knob. Happily, the most important controls for the stereo and hands-free phone are duplicated on the steering wheel, but its rubberized surface is more suited to a BMX bike than a $25,000 car.

Our $5,065 option package included an antitheft system and an autodimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink universal transceiver for opening a garage door. It also came with Toyota's Smart Key, high-intensity headlights, fog lamps, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), along with the nine-speaker stereo, voice-activated navigation system and Bluetooth wireless connection for hands-free cell phone use (for a list of compatible phones, visit Toyota's Web site with links to third-party resellers).

Toyota's GPS navigation computer delivers colorful and accurate maps. The car's position is updated frequently as you wheel through the streets, and inputting an address is easier than in most GPS systems with separate screens to enter the destination's number, street, and town; it boasts excellent predictive entry, so you can start with the first few letters and let the computer fill in the rest of the word. It can't create a 3D bird's-eye view of the route, however, and the system tends to generate routes that favor highway driving over more direct back roads. A calm female voice can direct you to your destination, and if you happen to miss a turn, it quietly reroutes your course. Unfortunately, it often warns you so early that there's a risk of making the wrong turn; nonetheless, we like its emergency screen with the locations of the closest police station, hospital, and Toyota dealer.

Despite shelling out extra money for the option package that includes the JBL CD player with nine speakers, the audio on our review car sounds muddy with booming bass. To our chagrin, the Prius has no options for satellite radio, a DVD player, or an emergency communications system such as OnStar. The really bad news is that the radio is not a standard design and can't be replaced unless you go to a custom car shop.

Safety is the Prius's strong suit with air bags up front as well as front and rear-side curtain bags. All told, it scores impressive five- and four-star ratings for the driver and passenger, respectively, and a four-star rollover rating. Should you be in an accident, the Prius has been designed to crumple on impact, and it has a black-box crash recorder that saves data on speed, braking, seat belts, and more. In addition to the car's three-year/36,000-mile warranty, the hybrid parts are covered for six years or 60,000 miles and three years of roadside assistance--appropriate for a hybrid, although Honda covers parts for eight years. Toyota's Web site has a lot of information for Prius owners, including specs, technology primers, FAQs, and even an application that tells you what service is needed. While the era of the backyard mechanic has gone the way of dollar-a-gallon gas, Toyota offers service manuals at reasonable prices and runs a 24-hour toll-free help line. We took the support service out for our own spin, and after about a minute on hold, a technician answered our question correctly.

Honda Civic Hybrid

Rather than start from scratch to create an all-new hybrid vehicle as Toyota did with the Prius, Honda took a more conservative route by hybridizing its popular Civic. The company added an electric motor to a downsized version of the Civic's drivetrain to create a mild hybrid that's kinder to the environment. But after putting hundreds of miles on a Civic Hybrid, we think Honda would have done better by starting with a blank slate. True, the Civic Hybrid goes farther on a gallon of gas than its nonhybrid version, but it's slow and, in most areas, comes in a distant second to the Toyota Prius. With a price of $19,900 ($20,415 delivered), the Civic Hybrid with a five-speed manual transmission costs $6,000 more than an entry-level Civic but comes in at about $1,000 less than the Toyota Prius's base price.

The driving force behind Honda's hybrids--Civic, Accord, and Insight--is a technology called integrated motor assist (IMA), wherein a small electric motor gives the car's 1.3-liter gasoline engine a little help. It's different from a full hybrid power train; unlike the Prius--which has two power plants (gas and electric) that work alone or together--the Civic's gas engine is the star, and the electric motor is a supporting actor who occasionally takes the stage. In other words, the motor is as an electric turbocharger that boosts the Civic's gas engine from 85 horsepower to 93 horsepower when needed.

When you take the car out of gear at a stoplight, the engine shuts itself off to save gas. As soon as you press the clutch, it calmly comes back to life, and you're ready to go. On hills or when accelerating, the electric assist smoothly comes online to give the engine a little boost, and the drivetrain acts like a generator to charge the battery pack during braking. The whole IMA process is seamless and barely perceptible to the driver. Plus, the nice mix of analog and digital gauges that reside behind the steering wheel shows you not only the basics but how much battery assist you're getting, whether the battery is charging, and its charge level. This superb blue-backlit instrument panel is much better for a quick glance than the Prius's video-game-like screen.

The IMA concept seems straightforward and sensible on paper, but on the road, the Civic's gas engine doesn't produce enough torque at low engine speeds, even with the assistance of the electric motor. As a result, to get going, you have to gun the engine and gingerly slip the clutch pedal of the five-speed transmission out so as not to stall it. The Civic's engine freely revs to its 6,000rpm redline and has a throaty exhaust note that will thrill car buffs, especially compared to the Prius's quiet efficiency. The Civic Hybrid can get to 60 miles per hour with a little wheel spin in a leisurely 12.1 seconds--1.8 seconds slower than the Prius--but compensates by being able to go from 30mph to 50mph in 4.9 seconds (the Prius took 7 seconds). Its MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension hug the road, but at 60mph, the car registers an annoyingly loud 75dBA (decibels adjusted), with a lot of road noise transferred into the cabin. Equipped with rear drum brakes, the Civic stops in just 135 feet from 60mph, a good 20 feet shorter than the Prius, which can be the difference between an accident and driving away. Our real-world fuel economy test yielded 41.6mpg, much better than the standard Civic, which is rated for 36mpg and 44mpg (city and highway, respectively) by the Environmental Protection Agency, but well off the pace set by the Prius; the Prius can go for a 550-mile journey on a tank of fuel. Honda also makes a model with an electronically controlled continuous variable automatic transmission that better uses the engine's available torque, but it's even slower and eats up 4mpg of the hybrid fuel economy advantage.

The 2,750-pound Civic is rated as a compact car by the EPA, and despite weighing 100 pounds less than the Prius, the Civic Hybrid is actually slightly longer than its Toyota counterpart. Since the Civic sedan has a trunk, it can't hold as much as the Prius hatchback, particularly because the hybrid batteries reside in the back--thus, you can't fold the rear seats flat. Still, there's room for five adults to ride in moderate comfort. The car's upright design can't touch the Prius's sleek aerodynamics, but it doesn't look out of place among traditional cars and has a better line of sight than the Prius, which makes for more confident driving and parking. In spite of a nice cruise-control system with handy steering wheel adjustments, the Civic is greatly lacking in creature comforts and expansion options. There's an optional six-disc CD player, but the stock radio and single-CD player in our test model sounded tinny and harsh. If this is your car of choice, our advice is to have a car tuner graft on custom entertainment and navigation equipment. The car's front and rear have been designed to crumple on impact, and the car has achieved five-star ratings for both the driver and passenger on frontal impact as well as four stars on side impact and rollover protection.

BMW got the resurrection of the Mini right. Being a third larger than the original, this thoroughly modern Mini could hardly be a slavish copy of that Issigonis-designed vehicle in which everyone from rock stars to the Royal Family (all behind darkened windows) darted about London in the swinging '60s of the century past. Nonetheless, designer Frank Stephenson caught the sassy, can-do attitude of the first Mini and made the new one a striking statement in style when it was introduced in 2002 as well as an e-ticket carnival ride. Not to mention a serious vehicle that can tote more than seems likely, can dry out wet pavement with its excellent handling and can stimulate more smiles than a precocious three-year-old at a grown-up party.

And that's just the Mini Cooper. The Mini Cooper S is even more fun with its higher levels of performance, though you're hardly "settling" with the base model.

In both models the Mini Cooper delivers sports car handling and acceleration. It offers the cargo convenience of a hatchback and decent passenger seating for four, all stuffed into the shortest footprint on the road. It's a high-quality piece with BMW engineering, as solid as any German sedan. Its retro styling is as endearing as a bulldog (which inspired the design).

Furthermore, with its multitude of passive and active safety systems, the Mini Cooper has been called the safest small car on the world's highways. All this starts for less than $17,000.

That's if you can find one. The reception of the new Mini has exceeded expectations. The number of BMW dealers who sell the Mini is being expanded, however, though slowly and meticulously to assure, BMW says, that its standards continue to be met. For the same reason, changes since 2002 have been incremental, refinements and added options more than anything.

For 2005, however, Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S are available as convertibles. All models get a few interior enhancements for 2005, including new interior lighting, storage space and new trim options. Revised headlamps and tail lamps and a new grille subtly freshen the looks of the 2005 Mini. The Cooper and Cooper S get new manual gearboxes with revised gearing for improved acceleration, and the S gets a slight bump in power to 168 horsepower.

Nearly three years after its introduction, the Porsche Cayenne no longer seems like such an incongruous idea. Porsche's sport-utility vehicle has quickly become part of the automotive landscape. The car-buying public has demonstrated its appreciation of the Porsche brand beyond the company's familiar sports cars, and Porsche dealerships are pleased by all the SUVs moving off their lots.

Longtime Porsche enthusiasts may have had the most difficult adjustment. For five decades before the Cayenne, their favorite car company carved its niche among automotive giants with quick, agile sports cars built on values diametrically opposed to those represented by big, strapping SUVs. It speaks to our changing automotive tastes, if not the changing car business, that Porsche was compelled to invest in an SUV and a new factory to build it.

With time and exposure, most fans of Porsche sports cars have come to appreciate the Cayenne as a true Porsche. The company's SUV is technically slick and remarkably fast, as Porsches are supposed to be, with on-road handling that belies (though does not defy) its mass. The Cayenne also delivers what most SUV buyers demand, starting with more cargo space than the typical sedan, more than enough capability for light off-highway use and impressive towing capacity. For style, pure performance and a balance of sport-utility virtues, the Porsche Cayenne is tough to beat.

Porsche hasn't been sitting still since Cayenne's launch in 2003. In 2004, Porsche introduced a V6 model that opened Cayenne to a much larger group of buyers. For 2005, it has added useful standard equipment and introduced new option packages. Most significantly, it offers Cayenne for the first time with something loyalists insist every Porsche needs: a 6-speed manual transmission.

But like many Porsches, the Porsche of SUVs can still be very expensive. The price spread across the Cayenne line is more than $50,000. A loaded Cayenne Turbo can crack the $100,000 barrier, and that alone will knock it off most shopping lists. Yet even the well heeled can be value conscious. Many buyers who can afford a Cayenne will find much of the performance and all the satisfaction of use or ownership for half that $100,000 price. The Cayenne will be truly appreciated by a relative handful of SUV buyers with exacting demands or unshakable brand loyalty. We might call them connoisseurs. Efficient, practical, affordable, polished and pleasant to drive, if not downright fun, with a reputation for reliability: These are the Honda Civic's hallmarks, and nothing about the 2005 model suggests anything has changed.

Measured by the hardware, little has changed on the Civic for 2005. There are a couple of new paint colors and a Special Edition package at the high end of the line-up. On the other hand, price increases are so modest that they haven't kept pace with inflation, and the Civic had significant changes inside and out for 2004.

Few carmakers offer the range or diversity Honda builds into the Civic line. There are sedans, coupes and a hatchback, with an emphasis on either features and convenience, performance or fuel efficiency and low cost of operation. All are notable for their excellent fuel economy, free-revving engines and solid handling, including the electrically assisted Hybrid. Up-level Civics come with powerful VTEC engines that deliver brisk acceleration. The Si hatchback is the flagship performance model, and a favorite among young enthusiast drivers for good reason. All provide superb comfort for front-seat passengers.

Three specialized Civics are designed specifically to minimize environmental impact and deliver better fuel economy than all but a few cars currently available. The most extreme is the Hybrid sedan, which gets up to 51 mpg with help from an electric motor that never needs to be plugged in. Owning and driving a Civic Hybrid is just like life with a regular Civic, almost. The Civic HX coupe gets 44 mpg on regular unleaded. There's also a Civic GX sedan that burns natural gas; Honda claims it has the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world.

Subtle styling changes were made for 2004 when bumpers, hoods, headlights and grilles on the coupe and sedan were redesigned to emphasize a baby-brother resemblance to the slick, smooth Honda Accord. The sporty Si hatchback was trimmed with new head- and tail lamps. All Civics were improved with less visible updates that reduced noise and vibration inside.

Nearly four decades after its introduction, the Honda Civic can rightfully be called an automotive icon. It remains one of America's best-selling small cars for good reason.
